I just don't update this site enough. Sorry about that.

Thank YOU for having an interest in my music. I've been making music since I was a little kid. In 1st grade I took piano lessons and shortly after I started I brought in my first original piece of music. It was a bluesy number...all black keys....and I would howl like a wolf as I played it. I wonder if I just knew on some primal level what the blues were about back then...or maybe I had heard the name "Howlin' Wolf" in passing and associated it with "the blues". Either way, since then I have not stopped creating music.

Since we last spoke, I have gotten engaged to an amazing woman who is lovely in every way. I proposed in Paris which was a lovely city (surprise, surprise). I am still all in on my new career as a "production technician" at NPR. I have very little time to actually work on my music.

The truth is though...When I had enough time to work on my music, I squandered the absolute shit out of it. I procrastinated...played video games. And I don't mean a game here and there..I got into MMORPGS which are essentially "real life replacements" where you sort of cease to function as any sort of normal human. I watched movies and shit TV. Any excuse to not work on my music was welcomed.

I try and remind myself that when I'm stuck at work. Or when I find I have 15 minutes to try and fix a mix or a couple hours to try and start on a song. That's really all the time I ever had.

These days...I at least appreciate the time more.

And there's nothing better than creating a song or two that I'm proud of - against all odds. It's still the best.

love love

will will
Will Mitchelltag:willsmusic.com,2005:Post/49699212017-12-09T09:59:16-05:002019-09-20T18:23:53-04:00New Day Job
Hello weary internet traveler,

Thanks for stopping by. It is Saturday morning, I'm inside watching The Crown on Netflix while it snows outside. I'm trying to get over a pretty bad cold and my nose is totally raw...Toilet paper and moisturizing tissues are not created equal and I am cheap.

I'm currently wondering if such thing as a breakfast soup exists so that I might comfort my illness with a nice warm soupy distraction..But I think the closest thing I can come up with is cereal - which, let's face it, is really more of a breakfast gazpacho.

I'm also out of Coffeemate which for my money is THE ONLY CREAMER. It is the Highlander of coffee creamers. There can be only one, and it can only be killed by beheading. Anyways, I'm out of supply and I might as well be out of coffee and sugar too..because without my precious original flavor coffeemate...it's just not even worth it.

I have a new day job cutting audio at NPR. It's really more of a night job since my shift lasts til 11pm. It is exciting being down the hall from the music department and the famous Tiny Desk. Its also a strange feeling being outside of the music department..Not that I necessarily want to be IN the music department. I guess I just want to wear a badge that says "I too play music" so when I pass other musicians in the hall we might give an affectionate nod to one another. Maybe possibly jam or open mic or play a show together. The whole building seems to have a deep appreciation for the arts and culture and music, and so far I love just being in and around that "vibe".*

I hope to have some new music for you in the not so distant future. Thanks for stopping by, and feel free to shoot me a message. I'd love to hear from you.

*Will apologizes for the use of the blacklisted word "vibe" and encourages you to use the word(s) "atmosphere" or "environment" in its place.

So much has happened in my life since then!

First...

I moved... (sad face). I loved Atlanta and I loved living there, but my girlfriend got a better job than I had. So, I followed her up to DC.

Yes, DC. The District of Columbia. I just had to double check the spelling of "Columbia"..that's how new I am to this city.

So, I moved at the beginning of the year and after months of finishing records, fixing up my disaster of a resume, and applying for probably hundreds of positions...I landed a job as an a/v technician.

This is a pretty different gig. Instead of getting coffee for jaded Christian rock acts and going to pick up burritos for post punk heroin addicts I am now running webcasts and learning the ins and outs of everything in the Audio Visual world at the #1 political think tank in DC.

Its my second week, and after working my first 9-5 job for nearly two weeks I no longer believe in the structure of our society...or money...or power. I would just like to be able to play my video games again...write some music....eat some good food.....take a stroll through town with Ashley...and not feel like every ounce of free time is just constantly slipping away.

"But Will", you say. "Don't you know that this is how everyone has always felt?"

I guess I didn't. I've been lucky to be able to have all the time I need to work on my music...other peoples music...Now I'm feeling the heat...A couple hours to myself everyday...If I'm lucky...That's it.

I'm probably being dramatic...maybe its just for effect. Maybe it comes across poorly because you, the reader, underwent this change a long time ago. And you don't even feel the need to welcome me to the club...because....you just don't have the time or energy to worry about my work/life transition.

I'm still playing music though...and I still want to make art. I actually think the desire is greater now that I don't have all the time in the world to work on it. Now that music isn't my full time job....its sort of becoming an interest to me again...a love of mine. Maybe its not my "career" right now (any maybe it is), but its still my art. So that's pretty cool.

I'm playing my first show in DC this weekend with my friends from Atlanta : Julian Morena and Boo Reefa.

I hope I'll play some more shows too. I'll keep you posted.
Will Mitchelltag:willsmusic.com,2005:Post/43495922016-08-30T18:50:03-04:002019-09-20T18:25:35-04:00Welcome!
Happy August 30th,
My name is Will Mitchell and I'm the sheriff around these parts...I'm also the sole inhabitant, local drunk, and village idiot. At your service. I am an indie folk/pop artist and producer..I also run When Will Productions which produces videos of local Atlanta talent as well as music for television and film etc.

Part of the reason I'm putting all of this information in this blog post is so that Spotify will verify me on their stuff...I'm up to like 13 followers last I checked on there and I need 250 (gasp!) to be able to upload a biography and put a picture on there I guess.

Maybe then they will finally take down the Joni Mitchell celtic cover song by some other Will Mitchell likely from Ireland or somewhere like that. It's the most popular song on there and the first thing you hear when you go to my artist page on Spotify...So you can understand my desire to get that taken off of there.

I don't mean to hate on Spotify...I use it constantly and pay them every month for their fancy service, but they're not great at responding to their artist's requests (I'm sure they get a lot of them). And I won't even get into the payment structures etc. and ya da ya da ya da.

I'm working on new music erbody. It has taken a long time for me to get back into the writing swing of things...But I think I'm back, or like within the county lines and almost to the city...if that makes sense.

Spotify, hit me up. Love you.
Will Mitchelltag:willsmusic.com,2005:Post/42511962016-06-27T10:14:07-04:002019-01-27T20:49:33-05:00When It's OverSome folks over at SCAD contacted me about doing a video project with them for a class they were taking. It was an absolute pleasure working with them and I only got about a gallon of water up my nose when I did the bathtub scene at the end of the video. At home, I'm generally buying different types of k-cups. Today I'm enjoying some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe from Green Mountain Coffee. My friend Ben recommended that I start buying coffee from places instead of blends. He has recently become a barista and is getting lots of new info.

I prefer a light roast coffee because I like the taste and typically don't mind that blast of caffeine that you get from a lighter roast. This Ethiopian coffee is light and delicious and tastes like many of the breakfast blends I typically like.

Now, I don't pretend to be an aficionado. For one thing, I almost have to have original Coffeemate creamer in my cup with my coffee. I can hear thousands of coffee-geeks eyes rolling into their heads as I say this. But I like cream and sugar. I can't help it. I used to go pretty wild with the cream and especially the sugar. I had no system. I just assumed it probably needed more sugar always...so I was known to put 8 packets into one cup. Crazy shit like that. I developed the stack the packs technique so people wouldn't be so wise to how many packets I was actually putting in. Rip up four at once and pour them all in. These days, its one teaspoon of sugar and then I add creamer until that coffee looks about right to me.

Coffee is a continuing journey for me. One year I only used a french press and whole beans. Another year I had that old school drip coffee maker..One year I would add a bit of salt to my cup (a tip I got from Alton Brown). This year I go back and forth from the Keurig and the french press. I have to make a special trip to find whole beans that are worth a damn and it's obviously more labor intensive to brew it with the french press. But when you get all your ratios right...you'll never make a finer cup.

Sometimes I go to Starbucks. I'm only human. But I almost never buy a "coffee". At Starbucks I'm getting a mocha. Sometimes regular...sometimes raspberry! *gasp*
When it's hot I might get a delicious Frappacuino. I can make a better cup of coffee at home. Sorry Starbucks, but thanks for the mochas! I'm having trouble coming up with a thesis for this post. I guess I just wanted to put it out there to the world that I'm a coffee lover. If you know me personally then you no doubt already knew that. I will usually have three mugs throughout the day and I'm about to go get my second now, so if you'll excuse me!

PS I'll have to show you my mug collection soon. Will Mitchelltag:willsmusic.com,2005:Post/39915212016-01-15T20:56:56-05:002019-01-27T20:52:35-05:00Tiny Desk Contest 2016Just submitted my song "Hang With Me" to NPR's Tiny Desk Contest!

W.
